Men’s Soccer Settles for 2-2 Tie at Hofstra

Svalander and Brkovic net goals, Bearcats now 3-1-2 in last six matches

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Freshman forward Oliver Svalander and senior forward Haris Brkovic each scored a goal but Binghamton (5-7-3) played to a 2-2 tie against Hofstra (7-6-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at the Hofstra Stadium. Despite the deadlock, the Bearcats are still 3-1-2 in their last six matches.

Binghamton was less than nine minutes away from wrapping up the game in regulation. Brkovic's unassisted goal – which was his first of the year – gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute.

In the 83rd minute, however, Hofstra was awarded a penalty kick and Matthew Vowinkel converted it to tie the match. It was his second goal of the game and his fifth in the last two games.

Binghamton was in control for much of the two overtime periods, outshooting the Pride 6-1 during that stretch. Hofstra goalkeeper Alex Ashton, however, made three saves to preserve the tie.

Despite being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Binghamton struck first on Svalander's unassisted goal in the 27th minute. It was his third goal in the past four games. Less than four minutes later, Vowinkel tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal of his own.

Binghamton finished with a 15-14 edge in total shots, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

"Overall, we played very well tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We started slow but finished very strong. We've been playing very well over the past two weeks. Andrew McDonnell gave us a big spark off the bench and Oliver is really coming into his own."

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper P.J. Parker finished with three saves.

The Bearcats return to America East play when they travel to Hartford on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.

NOTE: Svalander now has three goals and seven total points in the past four matches … Binghamton is 1-0-2 in their last three road matches … Binghamton has averaged 1.50 goals per game during the current six-game stretch.
