Women's soccer suffers first conference loss

Visiting Stony Brook scores once in each half, pins 2-0 defeat on Bearcats

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Stony Brook (9-4, 3-0 America East) scored once in each half and put the defensive clamps on Binghamton women's soccer (8-3-2, 2-1-1 AE) in a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Seawolves applied pressure from the opening whistle and broke through in the 10th minute. A quick feed from the middle led to a breakaway goal by Fanny Gotesson. The Bearcats were outshot 6-1 in the first half and 8-2 for the game. Stony Brook added an insurance goal in the 70th minute.

"Unfortunately we didn't have a good start to the game," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We can't play against a good quality opponent and not have the defensive effort ... and for whatever reason, it started right at the beginning and we didn't roll our way out of it. We had a better competitive mindset in the second half but we still lacked quality. Credit to Stony Brook ... they wanted it more and their effort was better than ours. We know that for future conference matches, you have to show up and give full quality for 90 minutes."

Sophomore keeper Haylee Poltorak made four saves.

The loss dropped BU into a third-place place in the America East standings with four games remaining. The top six teams advance to the postseason tournament.

Binghamton is off one week before facing Maine on the road next Sunday.
