Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Men's basketball falls to No. 1 Michigan State

Sessoms, Caldwell combine for 23 points, 10 rebs. in 100-47 setback

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 1 Michigan State (1-1) shot 57 percent in the first half, built a 31-point halftime cushion and went on to defeat visiting Binghamton men's basketball (0-2) 100-47 Sunday night at boisterous and sold out Breslin Center (14,797). It was the first time in program history that BU played the nation's top-ranked team.

The Bearcats trailed 11-5 before the Spartans ran off a 16-0 run spanning just 3:26. Down 29-7 halfway through the period, BU got it back to 15 points, 31-16, with a modest 9-2 run. The last three points came courtesy of a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Sam Sessoms with 8:22 remaining in the half. But top-ranked MSU doubled its lead in the final 5:49 to take a 54-23 cushion into intermission.

In the second half, MSU stretched its lead with 24 points in the paint and 14 points off Bearcat turnovers.

Sessoms led Binghamton with 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Richard Caldwell, Jr. added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Freshman guard Brenton Mills contributed eight points and classmate George Tinsley chipped in six points, five boards and a team-high five assists.

The Bearcats were dealt an early blow when starting senior forward and leading scorer Pierre Sarr left the game after just four minutes with an injury. He did not return.

"They are a really good team obviously ... and their size and speed is tough to match," head coach Tommy Dempsey said of the top-ranked Spartans. "I was proud of the way we competed all game long. We were hustling out there and our guys stayed with the game plan and competed all night. We have some good things going on early this season ... we just aren't quite connected yet because of having so many new faces."

Binghamton returns home briefly before heading to Manhattan for a Wednesday night game at Columbia.
