The Binghamton volleyball team dropped its season finale to UMBC Sunday afternoon in Vestal. The Bearcats fell 25-13, 25-15, 28-26. Prior to the match, the team honored seniors
Victoria Keghlian and
Kim Lavender.
On the afternoon, Keghlian led Binghamton in kills with nine, followed by eight from
Francela Ulate.
Kiara Adams handed out 19 assists.
Defensively,
Elis Gadelha registered seven blocks, while Ulate and Keghlian added three.
Kim Lavender had 10 digs.
Binghamton took an early lead at 6-4, but UMBC roared back with an 11-2 run to take a 15-8 advantage. A kill by Ulate brought it closer but, the Bearcats would only muster four more points on just one more kill in the frame as the Retrievers took it, 25-13.
The second set went in the favor of UMBC early on, but a 12-7 deficit was quickly timed to 13-11 following two kills by Ulate sandwiched around an ace from
Tyra Wilson. Following that spurt, the Retrievers would score four straight critical points and six of the final seven to take a commanding two sets to nothing lead.
The final set of the season was a battle, as the two teams went back-and-forth until the very end. Trailing 23-20, Ulate (kill) and
Anna Sprys (service ace) helped push across a 4-0 run to take a slight lead with set point. A long rally resulted in a point for UMBC and they scored again to put the Bearcat's backs against the wall. A block by Gadelha and Ulate tied it up and another block by the same duo tied it once again, but UMBC finally scored twice in a row to put away the victory.
The loss ends the season for Binghamton, as they will look forward to an improved 2020 campaign.
