VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman guard
Denai Bowman has been named the America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week. It marks the first time in her career that she has earned a weekly accolade from the conference.
In addition, senior
Kai Moon currently leads all NCAA Division I players in scoring with 28.7 points per game. It marks the first time in program history that the Bearcats had posted the nation's top scorer at any point during a season.
Bowman had an impressive all-around game in the Bearcats' 74-55 win over Niagara on Saturday. She finished with career highs in points (13), rebounds (six) and assists (three).
"Denai had a great game for us against Niagara," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "She was aggressive on both ends of the floor and put her teammates in great situations. She has put in the work every day since she got here, is very coachable and makes things happen when she is out on the floor."
Bowman has started two out of the Bearcats' four games so far this season. She is averaging 6.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.
This marks the second straight week that Binghamton has earned a weekly award from the America East Conference. Moon was the Co-Player of the Week last week.
As for Moon, she is the first Binghamton women's basketball player to begin the season with four 20-point games. Her signature game featured a career-best 36 points against Lafayette on Nov. 8.
The Bearcats have posted one women's basketball NCAA individual statistical champion during their program's history. Kim Albrecht was the top free throw shooter during the 2015-16 season, shooting 91.4 percent in the process.
Binghamton (4-0) is off to its best start since the 1998-99 season. It travels to Delaware State on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game.
