Unbeaten Women's Basketball Holds Off Delaware State 75-66

Bearcats off to 5-0 start for the first time in 21 years

DOVER, DEL. – Senior guard Carly Boland scored a team-high 19 points leading Binghamton (5-0) to a 75-66 victory over Delaware State (3-2) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday night at Memorial Hall. With the victory, the Bearcats remain off to their third-best start in the 47-year history of the program.

Boland went 6-for-12 from the field tonight and was 6-for-7 from the free throw line. She also recorded a game-high five assists.

Senior guard Kai Moon scored 12 points, pushing her to 991 points. In the process, she surpassed Sherae Swinson (2011-15) for 18th place all-time in program history. Swinson finished her career with 885 points.

Offensively, the Bearcats reached the 70-point mark for the fifth straight game – something that was last done when they scored 70 points in seven games straight from Jan. 20, 2001 to Feb. 8, 2011. Binghamton is currently averaging 76.4 points as a team so far this season.

"The girls really pulled it together and they took care of each other," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We say on the road, you can't leave it in anyone else's hands but yourself and I think they did a great job."

Down 19-18 after the first period, the Bearcats went on a 10-2 go up 30-22 with 5:07 left in the half. From there, Binghamton took a 42-33 lead at the break.

In the third period, the Bearcats converted six straight free throws to go up 56-45 with 1:53 to go.

The host Hornets pulled to within 67-61 with 1:38 left in regulation. Freshman guard Zahra Barnes, however, sank six straight free throws in the final 39 seconds to seal the victory.

Barnes finished with a career-high 10 points. Also reaching double figures in scoring was junior forward Olivia Ramil, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Lyric Turner led Delaware State with a game-high 21 points.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 45.8 percent (22-48) from the field. At the free throw line, they went 28-of-34.

In free throws attempts, Binghamton led with an 82.4 percent advantage over Delaware State with 65.4 percent.

Binghamton heads to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.

NOTES: The 1998-99 Binghamton team holds the school record with a 12-0 start while the 1996-97 squad started off the season 7-0
