The Binghamton volleyball team fell Friday night to New Hampshire in three sets in the team's first home matchup since October 6. The Bearcats were unable to cap a comeback in the third set and lost 25-18, 25-12, 25-22.
Francela Ulate recovered from a slow start and registered nine kills on the night to lead the way followed by five kills from
Anna Sprys and
Victoria Keghlian. Sprys added a solo block and totaled two blocks for the match.
Kiara Adams added 20 assists and had a season high four kills. Ulate added to her America East leading 34 service aces with two more.
The first set opened with the Wildcats taking a commanding lead at 10-5, but a 5-2 Bearcats run made it 12-10 and was capped off by a Ulate service ace. New Hampshire then proceeded to go on an extended 9-2 run to put this one out of reach at 21-12. Kills by Ulate and Keghlian brought it to 23-17, but the Wildcats were able to score two of the final three points, winning the opening set 25-18.
The Bearcats hung tough in the early portions of the second frame, but New Hampshire ended the team's hopes early after scoring eight of nine points. Ulate, Sprys and Keghlian continued to thrive offensively, but too many errors cost Binghamton in a 25-12 loss of the second set.
New Hampshire played well throughout the final set, taking a 19-10 advantage, but the Bearcats clawed their way back in it, as
Tyra Wilson and Ulate led the charge. An
Elis Gadelha kill made it 22-18 and three straight points kept New Hampshire fighting for match point until Abby Sullivan put away a kill to put Binghamton away.
The Bearcats have two games remaining on the schedule, both of which are next weekend. They will take on Albany next Friday before their season finale against UMBC Sunday. Seniors
Kim Lavender and
Victoria Keghlian will be celebrated Sunday.
