Women's Basketball Beats Eastern Michigan 78-67, Improves to 8-0

VESTAL, N.Y. – Two days after being named as one of the top under-the-radar teams in the nation, Binghamton continued its historic start to the 2019-20 women's basketball season.

Senior guard Kai Moon scored a game-high 21 points, powering the Bearcats (8-0) to a 78-67 win over Eastern Michigan (2-5) in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at the Events Center. With the victory, the Binghamton is off to its second-best start in program history, trailing only the 1998-99 squad that won 12 games to start its season. In addition, the eight-game winning streak is the longest in program history since the 2000-01 campaign.

On Friday, Binghamton was chosen by NCAA.com as one of five under the radar Division I teams in the nation following its 7-0 start. On Sunday, the Bearcats recorded one of their most impressive wins of the season against an Eagles' squad playing out of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Moon, who is averaging a team-best 24.5 points per game, was one of three Bearcat players to reach double figures in scoring. Junior forward Kaylee Wasco finished with 12 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the process. Sophomore forward Annie Ramil turned in a 10-point, 11 rebound performance to record the second double-double of her career.

"Our players continue to trust each other and our chemistry has been great," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Different players are continuing to step up for us. Eastern Michigan was a very scrappy team today and we responded very well."

Binghamton's victory overshadowed a 29-point point performance by Eastern Michigan's Areanna Combs. She went 10-of-21 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. In the process, she recorded the highest-scoring game by an opposing player at the Events Center this season.

Binghamton used a pair of buzzer-beating three-point shots at the end of the second and third periods respectively to get the separation it needed. Moon's three-point field goal right before the half gave the Bearcats a 34-27 lead. Sophomore guard Hayley Moore did the same at the end of the third period, padding the lead to 62-44.

Down 71-51 with 5:32 left in regulation, Eastern Michigan went on a 9-0 run over the ensuing three minutes. Combs had four of her points during that stretch.

Freshman guard Zahra Barnes was the key down the stretch, scoring six points in a span of 1:26, giving the Bearcats a 78-65 cushion with 1:18 left in regulation. She went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the process.

Senior guard Karlee Krchnavi finished with eight points, five rebounds, a pair of steals and a block. Fellow senior guard Carly Boland added six points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.

Aaliyah Stanley added 11 points for the Eagles.

Binghamton shot 45.6 percent from the field (26-of-57) and made 21 of its 27 free throw attempts (77.8 percent).

Prior to the game, Moon was honored during ceremony for scoring the 1,000th point of her career against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 23. She now has 1,062 points for her career and continues to rank No. 16 all-time in Binghamton program history. Moon is six points away from tying Rebecca Carmody for 15th place all time with 1,068 career points.

Up next for Binghamton is a trip to Cornell on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game. The Big Red is currently 5-2 but its game against Lafayette scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to the impending snow forecast.

NOTES: The 78 points against Eastern Michigan ties the second-highest total by Binghamton this season … as a team, the Bearcats are now averaging 74.8 points for the season.
