ITHACA, N.Y. –
Kai Moon scored the game-winning points with 10 seconds left in regulation, leading Binghamton (9-0) to a 59-56 victory over Cornell (5-3) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday night at Newman Arena. With the victory, the Bearcats remain off to their best start since the 1998-99 season and continue their longest winning streak since the 2000-01 campaign.
Binghamton continues its second-best start to a season in program history, trailing only the 12-0 start by the 1998-99 squad. In addition, the nine-game winning streak is the best since the 2000-01 team won 11 straight contests from Dec. 29-Feb. 8 of that season.
Moon, who led Binghamton with 15 points, broke a 56-56 tie by sinking a jumper from just inside the three-point arc. After a Cornell turnover, Moon was fouled with one second left to go and sank the second of her two free throw attempts.
Although the Bearcats struggled in the first half, Moon's three-point field goal at the buzzer pulled them to within 29-23. At the end of the third quarter, Moon struck again, nailing a three-point field goal to give the Bearcats a 41-40 lead.
In the fourth period, Binghamton used a 6-0 run to take a 53-44 lead with 5:11 left in regulation. The Big Red, however, battled back to tie the game at 56-56 on a pair of made free throws by Laura Bagwell-Katalinich.
That set the stage for Moon's heroics down the stretch.
"I am so proud of this team," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We knew we really had to gut it out tonight. Cornell is a very good team and they are going to give a lot of other teams problems this year."
All three Binghamton seniors reached double figures in scoring.
Carly Boland netted 12 points while
Karlee Krchnavi chipped in 10 points.
An unsung hero of the Bearcats' victory was freshman forward
Clare Traeger. She scored six points during the third quarter, going 3-for-4 from the field, as the Bearcats' outscored Cornell 18-11.Â
The Bearcat victory overshadowed a 23-point, 16 rebound performance by Bagwell-Katalinich. Samantha Widmann added 12 points for Cornell.
The Big Red outrebounded Binghamton 48-30. The Bearcats, however, nailed eight of their 19 three-point field goal shots.
Moon now has 1,077 points for her career and moves into 15th place all-time in program history. Against Cornell, she surpassed
Rebecca Carmody, who scored 1,068 points from 2015-19.
Binghamton is off until Dec. 17 when it travels to Miami (Fla.). The Hurricanes are currently ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 22 in the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WCBA) Poll.
NOTES: The Bearcats entered the game receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the first time in program history.Â
