Prominent women, events featured throughout 50th anniversary year

VESTAL, N.Y. - The athletics department is midway through its celebration of 50 years of women's athletics at the University during the 2019-20 year. A series of features, highlights, interviews and memories can be found here and on the athletics social media channels.

Beginning with the 1969-70 women's swimming and diving team, more than 1,500 female student-athletes have competed as Colonials and Bearcats. A special celebratory event is being planned for April so stay tuned for more details.

"Fifty years ago, an historic legacy was started that built the current foundation for women's athletics at this great University," Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. "This year we are excited to celebrate this milestone. Throughout the first 50 years there have been so many remarkable student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators who have each played a role in enhancing the scope of women's intercollegiate sports at Binghamton. The women who have worn the Binghamton/Harpur uniform have been Olympians, NCAA champions and All-Americans in athletics competition. They have also been Academic All-Americans and scholar-athletes in the classroom. We are proud of our rich tradition of women's athletics and are eager to share the many personal stories and achievements of those who have paved the way."

Twenty-five of the most prominent women who have influenced the Binghamton athletics program will be unveiled in chronological order during the academic year. Each week a new individual will be revealed and showcased on the website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Additionally, more than 100 of the most significant achievements for women's teams and student-athletes during the first 50 years will be shared across all platforms.
