Women’s Basketball Beats Grambling State 88-67 at FIU Tournament

Bearcats head into holiday break with 10-2 record

MIAMI, Fla. – Senior guard Kai Moon finished with 23 points, leading Binghamton (10-2) to an 88-67 win over Grambling State (1-9) in the final day of the Florida International University (FIU) Women's Basketball Holiday Hoops Showdown on Friday afternoon at the Ocean Bank Convention Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to their best 12-game start since the 1999-00 season.

Moon, who was named to the FIU Holiday Hoops All-Tournament Team, went 9-of-18 from the field in recording the 15th game of her career with 20 or more points. She also tied for the game high with three steals.
Junior forward Kaylee Wasco finished with 16 points while sophomore forward Annie Ramil turned in a 15-point, 11-rebound performance. It marked her third double-double of the season.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 48.5 percent from the field (33-of-68). They also dished 17 assists as opposed to just 12 turnovers and recorded 10 steals.

The 88 points is the second-highest total recorded by Binghamton this season, trailing only the 89 points it scored against Siena in the season opener.

"I'm really proud of our team for how we closed out the week," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We played some very good teams down here and everyone stepped up to play today. This week was a great learning experience for our team and it helped us to get ready for what's in store after the holidays."

Binghamton broke the game open early, going on a 9-0 run in a span of 2:18 to go up 16-9 with 1:53 left in the first period. Ramil paced a balanced attack with a three-point play during that stretch.

It was a 14-4 run in the final six minutes of the second period, however, that blew the game wide open as the Bearcats went up 44-24 at the break. Moon and Ramil combined for seven points during that span.

Binghamton's lead grew to as much as 73-45 with 7:04 left in regulation.

The Bearcats' win overshadowed a game-high 26 points by Grambling State's Ariel Williams. She was 6-for-11 from the field and sank all 13 of her free throw attempts. Teammate Candice Parramore added 14 points.

Junior forward Olivia Ramil finished with nine points, four rebounds, a team-best two blocks and a pair of assists. In her first start of the season, freshman guard Zahra Barnes dished out a game-high five assists to go along with four points, four rebounds and a block.

Binghamton had 36 of their points from off the bench.

Following the holiday break, Binghamton returns to action on Dec. 30 at home against NJIT. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES: The 1999-00 team, which was recently inducted into the Binghamton Athletic Hall of Fame, started the season 11-1. The program record for the best start remains 12-0 – set by the 1998-99 squad … Moon is now averaging 20.9 points per game. For her career, she has 1,119 points, which continues to rank 13th all-time in program history … as a team, Binghamton is averaging 72.0 points per game, which is on pace to be the fifth-best season average in program history ... Wasco finished one point off of her career-high 17 points, which she scored against Niagara back on Nov. 16.
