VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior guard
Kai Moon scored a game-high 27 points, powering Binghamton (11-2) to a 75-40 win over NJIT (3-10) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with the best record during their 19-year NCAA Division I era. In addition, Binghamton remains off to its best start since the 1999-00 campaign.
Moon, who is now averaging a career-best 21.4 points per game, went 10-of-20 from the field against NJIT and drained a pair of three-point field goals. In addition, she recorded her season highs in both assists (six) and steals (five).
Also finishing in double figures was senior guard
Carly Boland, who netted 15 points. Senior forward
Karlee Krchnavi, meanwhile, recorded a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points and a pair of steals.
As a team, the Bearcats shot 46.8 percent from the field (29-62), drained nine three-point field goals and hit eight of their 10 free throw attempts.
"It was a great team effort tonight," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "It was back and forth for most of the first half but we talked in the huddle about how we had to keep building on our lead. The girls did a terrific job tonight – every one of them."
Moon single-handedly took over the game in the final 2:04 of the first half. She scored all of the Bearcats' points during an 11-2 run that gave them a 41-25 lead at the break. Moon punctuated the run with a buzzer-beating, three-point field goal.
Play slowed down in the third period as Binghamton held a 46-31 lead with 2:50 left to go. From there, however, the Bearcats reeled off 20 unanswered points to go up 66-31 with 6:14 remaining in regulation. Moon had eight of her points and Boland netted five points during that stretch.
Danielle Tunstall led NJIT with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kenna Squier added 14 points.
The 40 points represents the fewest surrendered by the Bearcats this season.
Moon now has 1,146 points for her career and remains in 13th place all-time in Binghamton program history. She is four points away from tying Erica Carter (2008-12) for 12th place all time with 1,150 points.
The victory was also the 100th career win for Shapiro Ord. She was the head coach at Weber State from 2011-18 before arriving at Binghamton in June 2018. Since taking over the Beracats, Shapiro Ord has gone 23-20.
Binghamton begins America East play on Sunday at Albany with a 2 p.m. game.
