PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – No. 17 Michigan (2-0) snapped a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning and held off Binghamton baseball (0-2) 5-4 in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at First Data Field, spring training home of the New York Mets.
The Bearcats led 4-2 after three innings before Michigan evened the score with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the decisive eighth, the Wolverines used a two-out single, passed ball, wild pitch and RBI single to plate the winning run.
In their final at-bat in the ninth, the Bearcats looked to be in business when senior right fielder
Anthony Meduri led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. But Michigan freshman reliever Willie Weiss struck out three straight BU hitters to preserve the win. Â
Binghamton opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Junior left fielder
Daniel Franchi reached on an infield throwing error and went to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall had an infield single which moved Franchi to third. Sophomore designated hitter
Sam Freedman then produced an RBI groundout, scoring Franchi with the game's first run.Â
Michigan scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Two singles and a two-out, two-run double did the damage.
But Freedman and BU struck for three in the top of the third. With one out, Franchi reached base again via infield error and freshman second baseman
Cavan Tully dropped down a bunt single for his first collegiate hit. Both runners moved up after an infield throwing error. Marshall then hit a fielder's choice groundout that scored Franchi to tie the game at 2-2. Freedman then belted a 2-run double off the center field wall, giving BU a 4-2 lead.Â
Freedman wound up with a hit and three RBI.Â
On the mound, senior reliever
Robert Brown allowed just one hit and one run in 3.0 innings of work. He relieved junior starter
Ben Anderson, who struck out four and allowed three runs in his 4.0 innings.Â
The teams finish off their three-game set at 11 a.m. Sunday. Sophomore left-hander
Reid VanScoter gets the ball for his first start of 2019.Â
