PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – No. 17 Michigan (3-0) scored six times in the bottom of the eighth inning and defeated Binghamton (0-3) 12-2 in the final game of the weekend series between the teams at First Data Field.
The Bearcats stayed competitive for most of the game against the nationally-ranked Wolverines. Senior outfielder Sean Treholm had a RBI groundout in the top of the third inning, pulling the Bearcats to within 2-1. In the top of the seventh inning, Treholm scored on a RBI triple by junior catcher T.J. Wegman, trimming the deficit to 6-2.
The floodgates opened up, however, in that bottom of that eighth inning. Jack Blomgren had the big hit of the frame, with a two-run triple. Two of the six runs were unearned.
Jeff Criswell got the victory for Michigan, improving his record to 1-0. Sophomore
Reid VanScoter took the loss, dropping his record to 0-1.
Binghamton pounded out eight hits but left nine runners on base.
Up next for the Bearcats is a three-game series at Old Dominion Feb. 22-24.
