Women’s Basketball Defeats Vermont 59-50

Moon scores game-high 23 points as Bearcats win third straight game

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Junior guard Kai Moon scored a game-high 23 points, powering Binghamton (12-15, 7-7 AE) to a 59-50 win over Vermont (11-16, 7-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym. The victory is the three straight for the Bearcats, who move into sole possession of fifth place in the conference with two games left in the regular season.

Moon, who scored 21 of her points in the second half, finished 8-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. In the process, she recorded her fifth 20-point game of the season and seventh of her career.

Senior forward Rebecca Carmody finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds to record the 12th double-double of her career. In addition, she moves into 15th place all time in program history with 1,026 career points. Against Vermont, she surpassed Helene Thomas (1,018 points from 1981-85) and Jen Blues (1,019 points from 2002-06).

Sophomore forward Olivia Ramil, meanwhile, scored a career-high 14 points and six rebounds. She sank six of her 10 field goal attempts in the process.

On the defensive end, junior guard Karlee Krchnavi held Hannah Crymble, Vermont's leading scorer to just seven points. Krchnavi also finished with nine rebounds and has now averaged 12.3 rebounds over the past three games.

"This was a great team win on the road for us," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Kai played great in the second half and defensively, Karlee had tough assignment against Hannah Crymble and did terrific."

After scoring just seven points in the second period and falling behind 25-18 at the half, the Bearcats exploded for 25 points in the third period to take a 43-39 lead. Moon had 11 of her points during that stretch.

Vermont was within 54-50 with 50 seconds left to go in regulation but the Bearcats hit five of their final six free throws to ice the game.

Candace Wright led Vermont with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while Josie Larkins finished with 13 points.

Binghamton heads to Hartford on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
