Late-inning burst not enough for baseball

Bearcats plate eight runs in final two innings but fall at Old Dominion 12-9 in series finale

NORFOLK, Va. - Host ODU (3-2) snapped a 1-1 tie with six runs in the fifth inning and the Monarchs held off late-charging Binghamton baseball (0-5) 12-9 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Bud Metheny Complex.

In the final game of the abbreviated two-game set that was hampered by rain throughout, BU stormed back after digging itself a 9-1 hole. The Bearcats scored six runs in the eighth inning and added another pair in the ninth, but the Conference USA member Monarchs tacked on three more decisive runs in their half of the eighth to account for the final three-run margin.

Freshman catcher Connor Aoki went 3-for-5 with two RBI, junior second baseman Alex Baratta was 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior left fielder Daniel Franchi drove in two runs to spark the offense. Seniors Matt Tsukroff (1B) and Anthony Meduri (RF) had two hits apiece. Tsukroff scored twice and Meduri added an RBI.

Old Dominion used six hits, including a two-run home run, to ignite their six-run outburst in the fifth inning. The rally was aided by two walks, a hit batter, wild pitch and stolen base.

In BU's big eighth inning, Aoki delivered a two-run double down the right field line to bring the Bearcats to within two, 9-7.

But ODU answered in the bottom of the frame with three backbreaking runs, the final two coming on a two-out, two-run double.

In the ninth, BU plated two and loaded the bases before a game-ending strikeout left the tying run on first.

Junior starter Ben Anderson (L, 0-1) absorbed the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing five hits and three runs.

Binghamton next heads to West Virginia for a weekend set at Marshall.
