VESTAL, N.Y. - Second-place Stony Brook (19-5, 7-2 America East) put four players in double figures and pulled down 51 rebounds in an 85-59 win over host Binghamton men's basketball (6-18, 2-7 AE) Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Seawolves hit 13-of-25 from 3-point range and after building a 14-point halftime cushion, let BU no closer than seven in the second half.Â
"That was a very good basketball team we played tonight," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "Our kids fought hard and we made a couple pushes to get back in the game ... one in the first half and one to start the second half. But they are 19-5 for a reason. They are big and strong and made a lot of threes. I have no issues with our effort. The ball just didn't go in the basket and we just ran ito a better team tonight."
Senior forward
Caleb Stewart led BU with 16 points and 10 rebounds, earning his third double-double of the season. Stewart also reached double figure rebounds for the fifth straight game, tying BU's Division I record set by Mahamoud Jabbi in 2010-11.
Freshman guard
Sam Sessoms added 15 points, five assists and four steals.
Binghamton trailed by double digits less than five minutes into the contest and were down by as many as 20 in the first half before bringing it back to a 39-25 deficit at intermission. In the second, Stewart, Sessoms and senior guard
J.C. Show hit threes in the first 1:53 to bring the margin back to single digits, 41-34 with 18:07 left. But Stony Brook steadied itself with a 15-6 run and led by no fewer than 12 points the rest of the way. Â
Binghamton next travels to Durham for a Saturday afternoon tilt with New Hampshire.Â
