Baseball completes sweep with 2-1 win at VMI

Miller tosses 5 innings of 3-hit ball with 7 strikeouts; Drpich supplies game-winning HR

LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior pitcher Jake Miller and two relievers combined to hold VMI scoreless over the final seven innings and junior third baseman Justin Drpich hit a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning to pace Binghamton baseball (4-6) to a 2-1 win over the Keydets Sunday afternoon at Gray Minor Stadium. The win was BU's fourth in its last five games and completed a three-game weekend sweep of VMI.

Miller (W, 1-1) allowed just three singles over 5.0 innings and struck out seven. Sophomore Luke Dziados gave up one single in his 2.2 innings before giving way to freshman Ryan Bryggman, who earned his first collegiate save by working the final 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.

After VMI scored a run in the second inning on a single, hit batter and wild pitch, Miller and the two relievers buckled down the rest of the way.

Offensively, the Bearcats made the most of their four hits.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall was hit by pitch. Sophomore designated hitter Sam Freedman hit an infield single and then senior right fielder Sean Trenholm delivered an RBI groundout to tie the game.

One inning later, senior third baseman Justin Drpich led off with a home run over the wall in left center to give BU the 2-1 lead.

Freedman had half the team's hits after going 2-for-4.

Trenholm finished off a strong weekend at the plate that featured .333 hitting and four RBI.

Binghamton next plays five games in Georgia beginning with a weekend set at Southern Conference power Mercer University.
