Baseball stretches win streak to four

Bearcats beat Mercer 6-4 behind Brown, Marshall; BU takes series opener in Georgia

MACON, Ga. - Sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall hit a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning and senior reliever Robert Brown pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball to pace Binghamton baseball (5-6) to a 6-4 win over Mercer (10-9) Friday night at Orthogeorgia Park. It was BU's fourth straight win.

With the score knotted at 4-4, Marshall delivered a two-out solo home in the top of the seventh inning - his first of the season. The Bearcats added an unearned run in the top of the ninth and then Brown (W, 3-0) stranded the tying runs with a foul pop-up to end the game. Brown was exceptional, allowing just one hit in 4.1 scoreless innings. He struck out a pair and lowered his season ERA to 2.93.

The Bearcats were outhit 10-8 but scored runs in five innings, belted two home runs and didn't commit an error.

Binghamton scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the early lead before Mercer tallied three runs in the bottom of the third to jump ahead. The Bearcats reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fourth but the hosts tied it with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior second baseman Alex Baratta went 3-for-5 and drove in a run with a two-out single in the fourth that put BU ahead 4-3. Earlier in the inning, senior right fielder Anthony Meduri hit a leadoff home run to tie the score at 3-3. Meduri had two hits, including his first homer of the season. Marshall also drove in a run in the third inning.

Brown replaced senior starter Nick Gallagher, who went 4.2 innings, struck out six and allowed four runs.

The teams will play a single game at 2 p.m. Saturday. It will be broadcast on ESPN+. Junior right-hander Ben Anderson (1-1, 4.26 ERA) gets the start for the Bearcats.
