Baseball drops finale at Mercer 10-3

Wegmann goes 3-for-3, Baratta 2-for-4, Freedman drives in pair but BU win streak snapped

MACON, Ga. - Host Mercer (11-10) broke open a tight game with five runs in the sixth inning and the Bears salvaged the final game of a three-game set with a 10-3 win over Binghamton baseball (6-7) Sunday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park. The loss halted BU's win streak at five games.

The Bearcats trailed 4-3 before Mercer sent nine men to the plate in the pivotal sixth inning and used four extra-base hits to break the game open. The Bears added another run in the eighth and outhit BU 13-9.

Binghamton broke on top in the second inning. Senior right fielder Anthony Meduri led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman first baseman Kevin Gsell. Freshman shortstop Zachary Taylor then plated Meduri with a sacrifice fly to left.

But Mercer struck for two runs in each of the second and third innings to push ahead 4-1.

The Bearcats got two back in the fifth inning. Junior left fielder Daniel Franchi reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. With two outs, junior second baseman Alex Baratta singled and sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall walked to load the bases. Sophomore designated hitter Sam Freedman then delivered a two-run single through the right side to score Franchi and Baratta and bring BU to within one, 4-3.

But the Bearcats were kept off the scoreboard over the final four innings and Mercer added five runs off BU's bullpen for the final margin.

Junior catcher TJ Wegmann went 3-for-3 and Baratta went 2-for-4 with a double to finish off his outstanding weekend. In the three-game series, Baratta hit .667 (8-of-12) with five RBI. He raised his season average to .359.

Marshall made a highlight-reel catch in center field in the bottom of the first inning to rob Mercer's No. 2 hitter of a home run. Marshall raced to the wall and extended his glove out of play to pull back the long ball.

Binghamton next faces Big South member Kennesaw State in single games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
