Baseball falls to Marshall 4-3 in 15 innings

Longest game in program history goes five hours in West Virginia

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Host Marshall (5-5) scored the winning run on a 15th-inning wild pitch and defeated Binghamton baseball (1-6) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Center Field. It was the longest game in Binghamton baseball history and due to its length, the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled and won't be made up with inclement weather expected on Sunday.

The Bearcats outhit Marshall 11-10 and each team struck out 18 times and left 15 runners stranded in the five-hour game.

Marshall used a double and a single to put the winning run on third base in the bottom of the 15th inning and then plated the final run after a wild pitch.

Binghamton nearly won the game in 12 innings. In the top of the frame, sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall hit a two-out triple to right field and after back-to-back walks to sophomore designated hitter Sam Freedman and senior right fielder Anthony Meduri, BU had the bases loaded. Junior second baseman Alex Baratta then drew a walk to bring in Marshall and give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead.

But in the bottom of the frame, the Thundering Herd used a one-out single and three straight walks to push across the tying run.

Earlier in the game, Marshall scored single runs in the first and fourth innings and BU countered with tying runs in the second and sixth. In the second, Baratta hit a one-out single and senior first baseman Matt Tsukroff belted an RBI double to center field. In the sixth, Freedman singled with one out and eventually came around to score on an infield throwing error.

Freedman and Baratta had two hits apiece.

Junior starter Ben Anderson struck out nine in 5.0 innings. He scattered three hits and two runs. Sophomore Josh Kopcza and freshman Jack Collins each worked 3.0 scoreless innings. Collins struck out three and allowed just one hit.

The Bearcats next play a weekend set at VMI beginning with a game Friday in Lexington, Va.
