Daniel Franchi belted a pair of home runs and drove in four runs and senior designated hitter
Sean Trenholm added a tiebreaking two-run homer in the opener to lead Binghamton baseball (3-6) to a doubleheader sweep of host VMI (3-10) Saturday afternoon at Gray Minor Stadium. The Bearcats won the opener 4-2 and took the nightcap 8-4.
In Game 1, Franchi hit a two-run home run in the third inning to pull BU even 2-2. Then in the eighth inning, Trenholm came in as a pinch hitter after sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall singled with one out. Trenholm promptly belted a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left center to give BU its winning margin. Senior lefty
Robert Brown (W, 2-0) earned the win with 3.1 hitless innings in relief of senior starter
Nick Gallagher (6.0 IP, 2 runs). The pair of pitchers combined to strand 11 Keydet baserunners. Â
Franchi wound up 2-for-5 with the 2 RBI.
In Game 2, BU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair in the fiirst inning. Leadoff hitter Franchi opened the game by reaching on an infield fielding error. He went to third on another infield error and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Marshall. Senior right fielder
Anthony Meduri followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. In the third, BU made it 3-0 when Franchi led off with a solo home run. After VMI got one run back, the Bearcats posted single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and added a three-spot in the ninth. VMI scored three runs in their final two at-bats to tighten the final margin.
Franchi drove in a pair and scored three times, as did Marshall (3-for-5, 2 doubles). Trenholm and senior third baseman
Justin Drpich had two hits apiece and Meduri collected two RBI. Â
Junior starter
Ben Anderson (W, 1-1) went 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits. He fanned eight.Â
The teams will finish the three-game set with a single game Sunday afternoon.
