ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore third baseman
Sarah Benn and sophomore first baseman
Alex Guay each homered and finished with three RBI, powering Binghamton (8-10) to a 7-2 win at Winthrop (11-14) in a non-conference softball game on Friday afternoon at Terry Field. The game marked the first of a three-game series between the two teams.
The victory marked the 226th for head coach
Michelle Johnston during her 10-years at Binghamton. In the process, she becomes the all-time winningest coach in the 41-year history of the program. She surpasses Holly Brown, who went 225-221-3 from 1996-06. Johnston is currently 226-209 since she was hired in July 2006.
Guay and Benn, meanwhile, each homered in the top of the second inning as Binghamton built a 3-0 lead. Guay led off the frame with her first home run of the season. Three batters later, Benn drilled a two-run home run, which was also her first of the year.
Winthrop got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run by Ashley Westbrooks. The Bearcats, however, responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Guay delivered a two-run single during that frame and Benn singled home the other run.
Junior pitcher
Rozlyn Price led off the top of the seventh inning with her first home run of the season, padding the lead the 7-2. From there, she held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning to record her first complete-game victory of the season. Â
Price is now 2-1 on the season. She scattered two runs on three hits and struck out six batters. The loss was tagged to Madyson Watson, whose record dropped to 5-3.
Benn finished the game 3-for-4, while Guay was 2-for-3 and Price went 2-for-4.
The three RBI for Guay ties her career high. Benn, meanwhile, finished with three hits for the second time in three games.
Binghamton and Winthrop finish off their season with a noon doubleheader on Saturday. It will mark the final two games of the Bearcats' eight-day, 11-game Spring Break Trip.
