ALBANY, N.Y. - Senior ace
Nick Gallagher came within six outs of a no-hitter and Binghamton baseball (9-11, 2-2 America East) rapped 24 hits on the day but had to settle for a doubleheader split with Albany (9-12, 2-3 AE) Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The host Great Danes won the opener 4-3 in 11 innings and BU took the nightcap 11-1.Â
In Game 1, Gallagher took a no-hitter and a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning before the host Great Danes rallied to send it to extra innings. Albany then won the game on a bases-loaded, walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning. Gallagher put down the Danes in order in five of seven innings, surrendering only an unearned run in the fifth after two Bearcat infield errors. He struck out four, didn't walk a batter and lowered his season ERA to 4.36.Â
After hitting the leadoff batter in the bottom of the eighth, Gallagher gave up his only hit - a single through the right side - and was lifted after 95 pitches. Senior
Robert Brown induced a fly ball and double play to end the threat. But Albany used three singles in the bottom of the ninth to tie it at 3-3. Two innings later, a single, hit batter, error, walk and wild pitch gave the win to the Danes.Â
The Bearcats had an 11-5 hits advantage but left eight stranded.
Senior right fielder
Sean Trenholm went 3-for-5 and junior third baseman
Justin Drpich had two hits and an RBI.Â
In the seven-inning Game 2, junior
Ben Anderson (W, 4-1) continued his dominant season with a complete-game five-hitter. Anderson struck out seven and lowered his season ERA to 2.61.Â
The Bearcats snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth and then added four more in the sixth and the final two in the seventh.
Junior left fielder
Daniel Franchi went 4-for-5 with two RBI, sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Trenholm added two hits and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop
Jake Evans had two hits and scored three runs.Â
The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday with freshman
