Baseball overwhelms Albany 15-3

Trenholm drives in five runs, Baratta has five hits as Bearcats take conference series

ALBANY, N.Y. - Senior right fielder Sean Trenholm delivered a career-high five RBI, junior second baseman Alex Baratta went 5-for-6 with two RBI and Binghamton baseball (10-11, 3-2 America East) powered past Albany (9-13, 2-4 AE) 15-3 in the rubber game of their series Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Trenholm capped a huge weekend in which he went 8-for-14 with seven RBI in three games. Baratta, meanwhile, set his career high with five hits as BU totaled 18 hits and scored two or more runs in five consecutive innings.

The offensive explosion was plenty for the pitching tandem of freshman Thomas Babalis (W, 2-0) and sophomore Josh Kopcza (save). Babalis worked 5.0 innings and scattered four hits and two runs. Kopcza went the final 4.0 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

The Bearcats scored twice in the fourth inning, four in the fifth, two in each of the sixth and seventh and five in the eighth to reach double figure runs for the second straight game and fourth time in the last 10 games.

Trenholm started his damage with an RBI in the fifth inning. He added a two-out, two-run single in the sixth and then a two-run home run over the wall in dead center in the eighth. It was his second home run of the season and the five RBI raised his team-best count to 16 on the spring.

Baratta had singles in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings and capped his day with a two-run double in the eighth. With the five hits, he raised his season average to .381 (3rd in AE).

Sophomore shortstop Jake Evans had two hits and two RBI and sophomore designated hitter Sam Freedman and freshman first baseman Kevin Gsell each had a pair of hits.

Binghamton next plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Bucknell.
