Softball Gains Split at UMBC

Bearcats drop opener 4-2 but bounce back to win second game 9-0

BALTIMORE, Md . – Junior pitcher Rozlyn Price threw a two-hit shutout and belted a two-run home run, as Binghamton (11-13, 1-1 AE) split an America East softball doubleheader against UMBC (14-12, 1-1 AE) on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond at UMBC. The Bearcats lost the first game to the Retrievers 4-2 but rebounded to win the finale 9-0 in five innings.

Price went the distance in the second game, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-high eight batters. She allowed only five base runners to record the second complete-game shutout of her career. Price's two-run home run, which came in the top of the fourth inning, was her second in the team's last three games.

Sophomore first baseman Alex Guay finished the day with four RBI while junior catcher Sara Herskowitz homered and drove in three runs. Sophomore designated player Hannah Lyons hit a team-best .500 during the doubleheader (3-for-6) while Herskowtiz finished 2-for-5 (.400).

Guay's four RBI all came in the second game. Her RBI groundout in the top of the first inning put the Bearcats ahead 1-0 and her three-run double one inning later padded the lead to 5-0. The four RBI represents Guay's career high and she has now reached base safely in a team-best 10 consecutive games.

Price's two-run homer increased the lead to 7-0 and in the top of the fifth inning, Herskowitz capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Price is now 3-1 for the season while Gillian McCarthy fell to 4-6.

In the opener, however, it was Courtney Coppersmith of UMBC who was the star pitcher. Ranked fourth in the NCAA coming into the weekend with 11.63 strikeouts per game, she struck out 13 Binghamton batters and surrendered only two hits.

Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Bearcats tied the game on a RBI single by Lyons. One inning later, they deadlocked the game at 2-2 on a solo home run by Herskowitz.

The Retrievers, however, took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. One of the runs was unearned.

From there, Coppersmith retired the final six batters of the game, raising her record to 10-6.

Junior pitcher Rayn Gibson pitched effectively, allowing just three earned runs and striking out seven batters over six innings. Her record, however, dropped to 5-6.

Junior outfielder Stephanie Ragusa finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) and scored a team-best three runs.

Gibson and Price held UMBC to a .158 batting average during the afternoon.

Binghamton and UMBC conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
