Baseball splits twinbill with Stony Brook

Bearcats drop opener 7-6 in 10 innings but rebound for 5-0 win in Game 2 behind Anderson; Sunday start moved up to 9 a.m.

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior right-hander Ben Anderson fired a seven-inning shutout and junior second baseman Alex Baratta belted a two-run home run to lead Binghamton baseball (14-13, 4-3 America East) to a 5-0 win and doubleheader split with visiting Stony Brook (19-11, 8-3 AE) Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. The Seawolves rallied to take the opener 7-6 in 10 innings.

Anderson (W, 6-1) scattered eight hits and struck out nine with only one walk. Already the conference leader in wins and strikeouts, he lowered his season ERA to 1.94, also tops in the America East.

Binghamton gave him support with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Stony Brook outhit BU 8-6 for the game.

In the fourth inning, sophomore left fielder Andrew Eng led off with a single and Baratta followed with a single up the middle. Both runners advanced on a groundout before senior right fielder Anthony Meduri delivered a two-run single to right center, putting BU ahead 2-0. One inning later, Baratta sent a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left field for his first home run of the season.

Baratta went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and is hitting a team-high .370 this spring.

In the opener, BU was two outs away from a win but Stony Brook rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth and then won it with a run in the 10th.

The Bearcats led 3-0 after scoring twice in the third and once in the fourth. But the Seawolves answered with a 2-out grand slam after benefitting from two walks in the inning. Down 4-3, BU countered with three runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. Sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall blasted a two-run home run to left field and senior designated hitter Sean Trenholm added an RBI double.

But Stony Brook struck in the ninth, using a leadoff walk, double and infield single to get one run back and then a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6. In the 10th, the visitors used two more infield singles and a two-out, two-strike RBI single to score the winning run. The Bearcats put the leadoff hitter on when Trenholm singled but a failed sacrifice and three subsequent strikeouts ended the game.

Marshall went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Trenholm went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and junior left fielder Daniel Franchi added two hits.

Due to impending rain Sunday afternoon, the teams will start the rubber game at 9 a.m.
