Baseball blasts way past Niagara 16-4

Eng goes 3-for-3 with 3-run HR, 5 RBI; Bearcats score 12 runs in first four innings

VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Eng drove in five runs and Binghamton baseball (11-12) scored runs in each of the first seven innings to roll past visiting Niagara (6-20) 16-4 Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.

The Bearcats plated three runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to jump ahead 12-1. Binghamton added a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and finished with one run in the seventh. Niagara scored its three runs in the ninth.

Eng had three of BU's 18 hits as eight BU starters registered base hits. He had an RBI double in the first inning and then with runners on second and third and one out in the second, he launched a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right center for a three-run home run. It was his first home run of the season. Eng then singled in the fourth, added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and walked in the seventh to complete his 3-for-3 day.

Junior third baseman Justin Drpich went 3-for-5 with two RBI and junior second baseman Alex Baratta, sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall and freshman first baseman Kevin Gsell each had two RBI. Marshall also made a spectacular play in center field in the fourth inning. With one out, Niagara's Max Giordano sent a ball to deep left center but Marshall raced over to the wall, leaped and pulled back a sure home run.

The offensive fireworks were plenty in support of senior starter Nick Gallagher (W, 1-3), who allowed four hits and one run in his 5.0 innings. Gallagher struck out four. Freshman Thomas Babalis got 3.0 innings of work and held the Purple Eagles to one hit.

Binghamton hosts Central Connecticut State at noon on Sunday.
