VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior right-hander
Ben Anderson scattered five hits and no earned runs in six innings and Binghamton baseball (12-12) held off visiting Central Connecticut State (12-10), 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. It was the team's fourth win in its last five games.Â
As a half-dozen MLB scouts looked on, Anderson (W, 5-1) struck out eight and lowered his season ERA to 2.25 with another strong outing. He only allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning and raised his America East leading strikeout total to 57 (in 44.0 IP).Â
The Bearcats snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth and added another in the fifth. After CCSUÂ got one back in the sixth, BU added another in the seventh to make it 3-1. The Blue Devils scored the game's final run in the eighth but freshman
Jack Collins put down CCSU in order in the ninth for his first collegiate save. Collins struck out two.Â
Binghamton outhit CCSU 11-6 and got multi-hit performances from freshman third baseman
Zachary Taylor (3-for-4, RBI), sophomore shortstop
Jake Evans (2-for-3) and sophmore designated hitter
Andrew Eng (2-for-3).Â
Taylor drove in BU's first run with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth.Â
In the top of the fifth, Anderson worked out of a bases-loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to strand three. Then in the bottom of the frame, sophomore center fielder
Shane Marshall (2 RBI) plated a run with a groundout after Evans had singled and stolen second.Â
After CCSUÂ cut its deficit to 3-2 with an unearned run in the sixth, BU scored its third run in the seventh when Evans led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior left fielder
Daniel Franchi and scored on a Marshall single to center. Earlier in the game, Franchi charged on a shallow ball to left and made a diving catch to end the fourth inning. Â
The Bearcats play Tuesday at Cornell before welcoming conference-leading Stony Brook to the Complex for a weekend series. Â
