Baseball beats Cornell on road 8-4

Franchi collects four hits, Drpich three RBI as Bearcats win for fifth time in last six games

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (13-12) rapped 14 hits and scored seven runs in the first three innings to defeat host Cornell (7-17) 8-4 Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Bearcats have now won five of their last six to move over the .500 mark for the first time this spring.

Junior left fielder Daniel Franchi had four hits and junior third baseman Justin Drpich drove in three runs to lead the offense. 

The Bearcats jumped in front with three runs in the first inning and after Cornell put two on the board in the second, BU responded with four more runs in the third. The Big Red got one run back in the third and then both teams were held off the board for five of the remaining six frames. The teams traded single runs in the seventh inning to finish the scoring.

In the first, junior designated hitter Alex Baratta hit a two-run double to give BU a quick 2-0 lead. Senior right fielder Sean Trenholm added an RBI single as BU scored three runs on five hits. 

In the third, Drpich hit a two-run single, junior catcher T.J. Wegmann drove in a run and Franchi added a two-out, RBI single to give BU a 7-2 lead. Drpich added an RBI on a squeeze bunt in the seventh. 

Sophomore Luke Dziados went 4.0 innings and limited the damage in the second inning with a bases-loaded strikeout. Freshman Ryan Bryggman (W, 1-3) worked 3.0 innings and allowed four hits and a run to earn his first collegiate victory. Freshmen Tanner Sinicki and Dom DiRado worked one scoreless inning apiece to tame Cornell down the stretch. 

Sophomore center fielder Shane Marshall, freshman shortstop Zachary Taylor, freshman first baseman Kevin Gsell and Trenholm had two hits each. Marshall extended his hit streak to 12 games. He is hitting .404 with 14 RBI during that three-week stretch.

Binghamton hosts America East leader Stony Brook in a three-game set this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
