Men’s Soccer Falls Short at Rutgers 3-2

Luescher and Mansfield net first-half goals for Bearcats

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Pablo Avila scored the go-ahead goal with just one second left in the first half, lifting unbeaten Rutgers (4-0-0) to a 3-2 win over Binghamton (1-3-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at Yurcak Field. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Bearcats fought back to tie the game twice in a wild first half – on goals by junior forward Noah Luescher and freshman midfielder Dan Mansfield -- but Avila's goal proved decisive. He got control of a loose ball and fired it into the net right before the horn.

Luescher's goal, which tied the game at 1-1 came in the 23rd minute. He shot the ball from just outside the box for his team-best third goal of the season. That offset Rutgers' goal just 1:32 into the match, which was scored by Vincent Borden.

Rutgers reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute on a goal by Vincent Borden. He got inside the box, took a pass from Chris Taio and slid it into the net.

Just four minutes later, Mansfield's deadlocked the game at 2-2 with his first collegiate goal. He took a pass from freshman forward Matthew Cozetti and fired it into the corner of the net.

Avila's goal, however, ended the scoring for the match. Binghamton outshot Rutgers 8-5 over the final 45 minutes but was unable to get the game-tying goal.

"I thought tonight we played pretty well at times against a very good team," head coach Paul Marco. "We showed resiliency in coming back twice but we have to be better in moments during matches. We are disappointed in the outcome but we are proud of our guys and as a group, we are moving in the right direction."

Rutgers held a 15-13 edge in total shots but the Bearcats had a 9-7 lead in shots on goal. In goal, Oren Asher made seven saves to preserve the Scarlet Knight's win.

Binghamton heads to Iona on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.

NOTES: Luescher has already tied his career high for goals in a season. He scored three times in both 2017 and 2018 … the five first-half goals represents the most total goals scored in a half of a Bearcats' game since Drexel held a 3-2 halftime lead on Aug. 24, 2018 … Cozetti's assist was the first point of his collegiate career.
