VESTAL, N.Y. – Alessio Atzori and Troy Brady each scored a goal, lifting Canisius (1-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over Binghamton (1-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Binghamton won big in the shot differential (22-5) and shots on goal (9-3) but was unable to come up with the tying goal.
"Overall, I think we just ran out of time," head coach
Paul Marco said. "I am disappointed that we couldn't get the tying goal back. I didn't think there were a lot of highlights for us. We had a lot of shots but we didn't have a lot of great shots. We'll just put it behind us quickly and move forward."
Binghamton outshot the Golden Griffins 10-3 in the first half but surrendered the only goal during that span. In the 18th minute, Atzori took a cross from Federico Mereto and fired the ball into the net from close range.
Mereto also assisted on Brady's goal in the 63rd minute. Brady fired the ball diagonally from the left of the penalty box for his second goal of the season.
The shutout was broken in the 84th minute courtesy of an own goal. The Bearcats then fired three shots in the final three and a half minutes of the second half but were unable to get the equalizer.
Fabio D'errico made nine saves for Canisius to preserve the victory. His final stop came from close range with five seconds remaining in regulation.
Binghamton heads to Rutgers on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
