BANGOR, Maine – Host Maine (6-13, 2-3 America East) shot 53 percent, built a 13-point halftime lead and eased past Binghamton men's basketball (7-11, 1-4 AE) 86-63 Sunday afternoon at Cross Insurance Center.
Sophomore guard
Sam Sessoms scored a team-high 21 points but Maine put four players in double figures and nearly doubled up BU on the glass, snapping a two-game losing streak head-to-head against the Bearcats.
Binghamton trailed 46-33 at intermission and then Maine opened the second half with a 12-5 run to stretch the margin to 20. The Bearcats couldn't bring it back under 14 the rest of the way.
Sessoms, third in the America East in scoring and ninth in the country among underclassmen, hit 8-of-15 to eclipse his season scoring average (17.7). He went over the 900 point mark (909 pts.) only in his second season, keeping him well on pace to become the program's all-time scoring leader.
Junior guard
Javon "JJ" Brown hit 4-of-6 (2-of-2 3-pt.) for a season-high 12 points in just 12 minutes of action. Â Freshman guard
Brenton Mills chipped in 11 points (9 in first half).
The teams were each slow out of the gate offensively, combining for just five field goals in the game's first nine minutes when it was even at 7-7. But the Black Bears went on a 21-7 run to forge a 28-14 lead and then expanded the cushion to as many as 18 points before BU brought it back to 13 at the half. Binghamton hit 10-of-16 shots to end the half (63%) but Maine countered by converting 14 of its last 20 shots (70%).
Binghamton next travels to Long Island for a Wednesday night matchup with first-place Stony Brook. Â Â
