VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior guard
Karlee Krchnavi finished with a career-high 18 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a career-best six steals, leading Binghamton (15-6, 4-4 AE) to an 80-44 win over Hartford (0-21, 0-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory is the Bearcats' third in the past four games and gives them an 8-2 record at home this season.
Krchnavi, who has averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in the past two games, went 6-of-12 from the field against Hartford and drained four of her nine three-point shots. In addition, the six steals is the highest recorded by a Binghamton player this season.
The Bearcats had three other players reach double figures in scoring. Junior forward
Kaylee Wasco scored 12 points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Freshman guard
Denai Bowman also netted 12 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Senior guard
Kai Moon, meanwhile, added 10 points, five rebounds, a game-high six assists and five steals.
The 80 points scored by the Bearcats represents their third-highest total of the season. In addition, the 18 steals is their highest total of the year. The Bearcats were missing starting guard
Carly Boland, who was out sick, but had six players score at least seven points.
"It was nice to give a lot of people a chance to play tonight," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "It was good to see other people step up for Carly. We talk a lot about playing good defense and tonight the girls did a good job making sure they were in the right spots to make plays."
Binghamton got the separation they needed early, going up 24-9 at the end of the first period. Krchnavi had a team-best eight points during that stretch and the Bearcats shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21).
The Hawks got to within 40-32 with 6:11 left in the third period. From there, however, Binghamton blew the game open with a 21-2 run to go up 61-34 with 9:47 left in regulation.
Sierra Smith led Hartford with 10 points. She also finished with six rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Bearcats grabbed 49 rebounds, which was their second-highest total of the season. They also scored 29 of their points off of turnovers.
Sophomore guard
Hayley Moore finished with nine points – all from beyond the three-point arc – while sophomore
Annie Ramil chipped in seven points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
Moon moves into sole possession of sixth place all time in program history with 378 made free throws. Heading into the game against Hartford, she was tied with Laura Sario (2004-08), who made 374 free throws.
In addition, Moon also moves into sole possession of seventh place with 181 three-point field goals. She entered the game against the Hawks tied with Cathy Mackin, who made 179 treys from 1994-98.
Binghamton has a bye this weekend and returns to action next Wednesday at home against Albany at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The Bearcats' 15-6 start is their best thru 21 games since they were 16-5 at the same point during the 2001-02 season … Binghamton is now a perfect 11-0 when scoring at least 70 points … they are also 12-0 when shooting at least 40 percent from the field.
