Women’s Basketball Defeats Albany 58-42

Moon scores game-high 23 points as Bearcats win third straight game

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior guard Kai Moon scored a game-high 23 points, powering Binghamton (16-6, 5-4 AE) to a 58-42 win over Albany (8-15, 4-6 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory is the third straight win for the Bearcats and breaks their 21-game losing streak against the Great Danes. Not since Feb. 20, 2011 has Binghamton defeated its longtime SUNY rival.

Moon, who came into the game averaging a career-best 20.2 points per game, went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and drained a pair of three-point field goals. She also recorded a season-high six steals.

Turnovers were also a key to the win. The Bearcats turned the ball over a season-low five times and forced 22 Great Dane miscues. Binghamton also recorded 16 steals.

"I thought it was a great team effort," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We did a good job defensively because we did not want Albany to get any open, easy looks. We got 16 steals tonight and applied a lot of pressure to make things happen."

Binghamton broke the game open early with a 21-2 run in a span of 8:56 to go up 25-8 with 6:28 left in the second period Moon paced the Bearcats with eight points during that stretch, including both of her three-point field goals.

Albany, however, came clawing back and got to within 40-35 on a basket by Helene Haegerstrand with exactly nine minutes left in regulation. She led the Great Danes with 16 points on the night.

The Bearcats then regrouped to go on a 10-2 run in the ensuing 3:22 to take a 50-37 lead. Senior guard Carly Boland drained a pair of three-point field goals during that stretch.

Senior guard Karlee Krchnavi finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assists, a block and a pair of steals. Junior forward Olivia Ramil added eight points, five rebounds and two assists.

From the free throw line, Binghamton went 14-for-18 for the game (.778) and was 8-for-10 (.800) during the game-clinching fourth period.

The 42 points allowed is the Bearcats' second-best defensive performance of the season. In the past two games, Binghamton has allowed only 43.0 points per contest.

With 387 made free throws for her career, Moon moves into fourth place all time in Binghamton program history. Against Albany, she surpassed Rachel Laws, who made 385 free throws from 2002-06.

In addition, Moon now has 1,316 career points. She remains in sixth place all-time in program history. Her performance against Albany marked the 21st time that she has scored at least 20 points.

With a 16-6 record, the Bearcats are now 10 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2001-02 season. They finished 19-9 that year, which was their first campaign in the America East.

Binghamton heads to Maine on Sunday for a noon game.

NOTES: The game against Albany marked the Bearcats' annual Play4Kay Game. Prior to the game, head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord pledged $5.00 for every point the Bearcats scored to go towards the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. With 58 points scored, Shaprio Ord will make a donation of $290.00 …  the score in the Bearcats' last win over Albany was 41-40 on the road … Binghamton is now 9-2 at home this season.
