BANGOR, Maine. – Maeve Carroll turned in a 24-point, 15-rebound performance, powering Maine (11-14, 7-4 AE) to a 75-65 overtime win over Binghamton (16-7, 5-5 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center. The loss snaps the Bearcats three-game winning streak and marked their first overtime game of the season.
Carroll was one of three Black Bear players to score at least 20 points. Anne Simon added 23 points while Dor Saar finished with 21 points and a game-high 13 assists.
The Bearcats were led by senior guard
Kai Moon, who finished with 17 points. She also added five rebounds and three steals. Fellow senior guard
Carly Boland had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists while sophomore forward
Annie Ramil chipped in 11 points.
Moon forced overtime when she converted a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left in the fourth period. On the Black Bears ensuring possession, Moon came up with the steal at the 27-second mark. Her shot at the end of regulation, however, was off the rim.
Given new life, the Black Bears outscored the Bearcats 14-4 during the extra period. Carroll led the way with five points during that stretch while Maine as a team made five of their six field goal attempts. Binghamton, by contrast, misfired on all seven of their shots.
Maine held a commanding 40-26 lead in points in the paint and shot 47 percent from the field (30-of-64). The Bearcats shot 39 percent (23-of-59) but were only 13-of-21 from the free throw line (62 percent).
"Maine is a great team and the fans were amazing today," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "But we didn't stick to the game plan. We can't allow them 40 points in the paint and we can't make the unforced turnovers that we did. We got to move forward and get better."
Senior guard
Karlee Krchnavi had eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman guard
Denai Bowman finished with five points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
Moon now has 1,333 points for her career. She remains in sixth place all time in Binghamton program history and is now eight points away from tying Leah Truncale (1998-02) for fifth place all time with 1,341 career points.
Binghamton heads to first-place Stony Brook on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
