Women’s Basketball Edged by First-Place Stony Brook 58-54

Moon nets game-high 20 points

STONY BROOK, N.Y. --- Kaela Hilaire scored seven points in the final 36 seconds as first-place Stony Brook (24-1, 12-0 AE) held off Binghamton (16-8, 5-6 AE) 58-54 in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. The Seawolves, who are receiving votes in both national Top 25 polls, extended their nation-leading winning streak to 21 games.

For the second time in four days, the Bearcats went down to the wire against one of the top teams in the conference on the road. After battling Maine into overtime on Sunday, they erased an 11-point deficit in the final period at Stony Brook before Hilare's game-clinching points.

Senior guard Kai Moon led all scorers with 20 points. She added four rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals. Sophomore guard Hayley Moore netted a season-best 12 points while senior guard Carly Boland added 10 points.

The Seawolves appeared in control of the game when Victoria Johnson banked a three-point shot off the backboard at the end of the third period. At that point, the Seawolves were ahead 47-36.

From there, however, Binghamton came storming back to deadlock the game at 49-49 with 5:33 left in regulation. Moore drained three three-point field goals during that stretch, including the game-tying shot.

The score was tied at 51-51 when Hilaire canned a three-point shot with 36 seconds left in regulation. She then iced the game by going a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line during the final 16 seconds.

Hilaire led Stony Brook with 17 points while Anastasia Warren added 11 points. Cheyenne Clark, meanwhile, pulled down a game-high 15 points.

Led by Clark, the Seawolves held a 46-27 edge in rebounding. They also made 10 of their 12 free throw attempts while the Bearcats converted only two of their six attempts.

Binghamton did finish with 13 steals, marking the third time in the past four games they have finished in double digits. In addition to Moon, senior guard Karlee Krchnavi recorded three steals, to go along with six rebounds and a pair of assists.

From beyond the arc, the Bearcats made 10 three-point field goal attempts, which tied their second-highest total of the season. Moore and Moon each drained four shots from beyond the arc.

Moon now has 1,353 points for her career and moves into fifth place all time in Binghamton program history. Against Stony Brook, she surpassed Leah Truncale, who scored 1,341 points from 1998-02.

In addition, Moon now has 188 three-point field goals for her career and moves into fourth place all time in program history. Against Stony Brook, she surpassed Jen Blues (185 from 2002-06) and Andrea Holmes (186 from 2008-12).

Binghamton returns home to face Vermont on Saturday at 2 p.m. Three of the Bearcats' final five home games will be played at the Events Center.
