VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Stony Brook (3-4, 1-0 America East) used a 23-8 run that bookended the halves and the Seawolves toppled Binghamton men's basketball (0-4, 0-1 AE) 73-59 in the conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Seawolves ended the first half with an 9-0 run in the final 2:41 and then began the second half with a 14-8 run to establish an 18-point cushion. Stony Brook made 9-of-11 shots to open the second half and shot 50 percent for the game.Â
Binghamton, minus senior center
Thomas Bruce, who is out with an injury, trimmed its margin from 23 points down to 11 in the closing minutes but could draw no closer. Sophomore guard
Tyler Bertram led BU with 12 points - all in the first half. Bertram drained 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Junior forward
Christian Hinckson, playing in his first game as a Bearcat after receiving an NCAA transfer waiver, contributed eight points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward
George Tinsley chipped in seven points. Leading scorer
Brenton Mills, who was averaging 18.0 points entering the game but has been sidelined a week with an injury, was limited to four points in 24 minutes. Â
"It was a disappointing day," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "They came in and were a step faster and took it to us from the start. We tried to hang in there but they were better today. We will have to play better tomorrow."
The teams will square off again at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Events Center.
