Men's basketball knocks off UMBC 75-69

Mills, Beamer combine for 42 points; BU drains 15 season-high 3-pointers to notch first win

BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomores Brenton Mills (22 pts.) and Bryce Beamer (20) combined for 42 points and visiting Binghamton men's basketball (1-6, 1-3 AE) drained a season-high 15 3-pointers to push past UMBC (7-2, 3-1 AE) 75-69 in an America East game Monday afternoon from UMBC Event Center. The win, BU's third in its last four head-to-head against the Retrievers, gave Binghamton its first win of the season.

The teams played a single-digit contest throughout for the second straight day, but BU turned the corner with nine 3-pointers and 50 percent shooting in the decisive second half. The game was tied 10 times and had seven lead changes.

"I'm really proud of our kids to be able to get out of here with a win today," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "We've had so many close games but hadn't been rewarded yet. But we've stuck with it. Our guys are playing so hard and sometimes when you don't see the results it can be very frustrating. But today we were able to get a result and hopefully it's the first of many."

Mills led the push out of the gate by scoring eight of the team's first 11 points. The Bearcats shook off a six-point deficit midway through the first half and were tied at 32-32 at intermission. Beamer took over in the second half, tallying 15 of his 20 points. He made 5-of-9 shots, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and secured his first collegiate double-double with 10 rebounds. Beamer, Mills and sophomore guard Dan Petcash (14 pts.) led a barrage of BU threes by canning four apiece. Sophomore guard Tyler Bertram added three 3-pointers and 11 points. Binghamton hit 15-of-36 (42%) from long distance in the game, including 9-of-18 in the second half.

In the second half, BU opened with a 13-4 run that featured a pair of threes from Petcash and one from Bertram. UMBC countered with an 18-7 run to take back the lead, 54-52, with 10:07 left. But Beamer responded with a three and a driving layup. A subsequent Mills jumper gave the Bearcats a 59-54 lead. The game was tied two more times in the next two minutes before Mills sparked one final 3-point flurry that gave BU the win. The Bearcats drilled four 3s in a 1:01 span, two by Mills and one each from Beamer and Petcash. The final dagger was a fast break feed from sophomore forward George Tinsley (11 rebs., 5 assists) to Beamer, who finished for a 73-67 cushion with 36 seconds left. Mills iced the win with two free throws with 15 seconds left.

Binghamton owned the boards with a 45-26 margin, thanks in part to 15 offensive rebounds.

Binghamton next plays a weekend set at Hartford next Saturday and Sunday.
