SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Host Wofford (1-0) used three big innings to wipe out an early Binghamton (0-1) lead and the Southern Conference favorites delivered a 15-1 setback in the season opener for both teams Friday night at King Field.
The Bearcats jumped ahead with a run in their first frame. Senior leadoff hitter
Daniel Franchi singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored two hitters later when senior second baseman
Alex Baratta ripped an RBI double down the left field line.Â
But Wofford plated four runs in both the second and third innings and blew the game open with a six-run outburst in the fifth inning. The Terriers collected two home runs and 12 hits - with half the team's hits plus four RBIs coming from the seven and eight spots in the order.Â
Baratta had two of BU's five hits.Â
Freshman reliever
Douglas Goodwin was the most effective of three Bearcat pitchers. Goodwin pitched the final three shutout innings and only allowed one hit (single) with three strikeouts.Â
Franchi and junior center fielder
Shane Marshall each reached base twice - with a single and walk.Â
The teams continue their three-game series with a 2 p.m. Saturday matchup. Sophomore right-hander
Jack Collins gets his first career start after transitioning from a closer role in 2019. Â
