SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Host Wofford (2-0) took the lead for good with a three-run third inning and went on to defeat Binghamton baseball (0-2) 9-5 Saturday afternoon at King Field.
The Bearcats led 2-1 after plating a pair of runs in the top of the third. But the Terriers scored three in the bottom of the frame, added three more in the fifth and two in the seventh to pull away.
Wofford outhit the Bearcats 15-11.
Trailing 1-0, BU scored two runs in the third to go ahead 2-1. Junior shortstop
Jake Evans led off with a single and sophomore left fielder
Cavan Tully followed with a walk. Senior right fielder
Daniel Franchi moved them over with a sacrifice, setting the table for BU's potent 2-3 hitters. Junior center fielder
Shane Marshall tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center and senior second baseman
Alex Baratta ripped an RBI double to left field to give the Bearcats the lead.
But Wofford used a walk-single-balk sequence to tie the score and then delivered a two-out, two-run single to ease ahead 4-2. In the fifth inning, the hosts plated three more runs on four hits to stretch the margin.
Down 9-2, the Bearcats scored the game's final three runs – two in the eighth and another in the ninth. In the eighth, Marshall and Baratta singled in succession and two batters later, senior third baseman
Justin Drpich hit a two-run double to right center. Binghamton then loaded the bases before Wofford ended the threat with a groundout. The Bearcats stranded 10 for the game.
In the ninth, Drpich added an RBI single after Baratta walked and sophomore first baseman
Kevin Gsell singled.
Drpich went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and Baratta went 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI and Gsell added a pair of hits.
The teams will finish up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday. Junior right-hander
