SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Host Wofford (3-0) hit a two-strike, two-out walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Binghamton baseball (0-3) 5-4 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at King Field.
The Bearcats had battled back from a 4-1 deficit before a failed pickoff attempt in the ninth set up the winning hit. Three Bearcat pitchers kept the potent Terriers off the board for seven innings, allowing BU's offense to rally.
"Of course we're disappointed we didn't come away with a win," head coach
Tim Sinicki said. "But I do think we played better every time we took the field. Games against high-level NCAA-tournament-type competition early in the season will only make us better in the long run."
For the second time in three games, Binghamton scored in its first at-bat to grab an early lead. Senior right fielder
Daniel Franchi led off the game with a double to left center. With two outs, sophomore first baseman
Kevin Gsell ripped an RBI single to right to put the Bearcats on top 1-0.
But Wofford countered with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame.Â
In the fifth, BU got two runs back, however. Junior shortstop
Jake Evans hit a leadoff double and senior catcher
TJ Wegmann blasted a two-run home run over the right field wall to make it 4-3.Â
One inning later, Wegmann came through again. With one out, sophomore left fielder
Cavan Tully reached on an error and with two out, Evans also reached on a fielding error. With runners on first and third, Wegmann stroked an RBI single to right to tie the game at 4-4.
After junior starter
Josh Kopcza kept Wofford off the board in the second and third frames, sophomore
Ryan Bryggman entered and didn't allow a hit over 4.0 scoreless innings. Bryggman struck out three before giving way to freshman
Dylan Gearhart in the eighth. Gearhart struck out two in the eighth and recorded the final out on a great defensive infield play. With the go-ahead run coming home from third on contact, Gsell made a great defensive play on the right side and fed Gearhart, who was covering the bag and just beat the runner. Gearhart struck out three in his 1.2 innings.
The Bearcats had a good chance to forge ahead in the top of the ninth when junior center fielder
Shane Marshall led off with a single and stole second. But two fly outs and a strikeout left him there. Binghamton stranded 10 runners in the game.
Wegmann went 3-for-4 with the home run and three RBI. Marshall had two hits.Â
The Bearcats return home before flying to Florida for next weekend's three-game set at 2019 NCAA tournament team Florida Atlantic. Â
