FARMVILLE, Va. - Senior second baseman
Alex Baratta went 4-for-4 with a career-high five RBI and Binghamton baseball (1-6) built a 9-0 lead before holding off host Longwood (2-8) 10-8 Friday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
The Bearcats struck early with one run in the first, three in the second and five more in the third to jump ahead 9-0. But BU was limited to one run over the game's final six innings and the host Lancers made a late push. Longwood scored two runs in the sixth, four in the eighth, two more in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate before a comebacker to the mound ended the threat.
Sophomore starter
Thomas Babalis (W, 1-1) struck out a career-high nine batters and went 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits.Â
Baratta sparked a 13-hit BU attack with four hits. He opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, added a sacrifice fly in the second, a two-run single in the third and a two-out, RBI single in the seventh to stake the Bearcats to a 10-2 cushion.Â
Senior third baseman
Justin Drpich, sophomore catcher
Connor Aoki and junior shortstop
Jake Evans had two hits each.
The teams continue their weekend series with a single game at noon on Saturday. Sophomore right-hander
Jack Collins gets the start.
