DURHAM, N.H. – Host New Hampshire (15-13, 8-7 America East) closed out the first half with a 24-4 run and dealt Binghamton men's basketball (10-19, 4-12 AE) an 89-70 loss in BU's season finale Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The loss coupled with Maine's home win eliminated the Bearcats from postseason consideration.
Sophomore guard
Sam Sessoms scored a one-half record 30 of his game-high 38 points in the second half but Binghamton could draw no closer than 14 as UNH shot 58 percent in the period to keep BU at bay.
Sessoms made 14-of-27 shots despite nursing a score hand and finished off his sophomore season with 563 points (19.4 ppg.).
"We ran into a really hot team today," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "They are a handful right now ... they got the separation at the end of the first half and the hole was too big to overcome. I thought we battled for 40 minutes but the better team won today."
Freshmen
George Tinsley and
Hakon Hjalmarsson had eight points apiece to help the offense.
The Bearcats put 48 points on the board in the second half but couldn't overcome an 18-point halftime deficit (40-22).
New Hampshire improved to 10-2 at home this season and extended its win streak to four. UNH entered the game ranked No. 3 in the entire nation in rebounding and enjoyed a plus 11 margin on the glass.
