Softball Gains Split in Second Day of Norfolk-Hampton Tournament

Bearcats blank Wagner 8-0, lose to Hampton 5-3

HAMPTON, Va. – Senior outfielder Stephanie Ragusa scored three times and junior shortstop Makayla Alvarez drove in a pair of runs as Binghamton (3-11) gained a split in the second day of the Norfolk-Hampton softball Tournament on Saturday. The Bearcats beat Wagner (3-4) 8-0 in six innings in the first game before losing 5-3 to Hampton (13-3) in the finale.

Ragusa posted a career-high four hits and a career-best three runs against Wagner. She finished the day 4-for-8 (.500) with a double. Alvarez, meanwhile, was 3-for-6 and also belted a double.

Senior catcher Sara Herskowitz hit a team-best .600 for the day, going 3-for-5 and scoring a pair of runs.

In the opener against Wagner, the Bearcats broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the top of the third inning. Ragusa stole home to score the first run and Alvarez had a RBI single during that frame.

Binghamton scored twice more in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Tessa Nuss had a RBI ground out and senior pitcher Rozlyn Price doubled home the other run.

Ragusa capped the scoring in the top of the sixth inning when she scored on a groundout by Alvarez.

Price improved to 1-2 with the victory while Madison Ferraro fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Sophomore Marissa Braito finished the game 2-for-4.

Against Hampton, however, the Bearcats fell behind 4-0 thru two innings. Tiera Washington singled home a run in the bottom of the first inning and drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning.

Binghamton came back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Alvarez scored on a ground out and the other two runs came on a fielding error.

The Pirates then got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of a wild pitch.

Emily Workman improved to 2-2 with the win while senior pitcher Rayn Gibson fell to 1-5 with the loss.

Herskowitz was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game.

Braito finished the day .500 (3-for-6).
