HAMPTON, Va. – Senior outfielder
Stephanie Ragusa scored three times and junior shortstop
Makayla Alvarez drove in a pair of runs as Binghamton (3-11) gained a split in the second day of the Norfolk-Hampton softball Tournament on Saturday. The Bearcats beat Wagner (3-4) 8-0 in six innings in the first game before losing 5-3 to Hampton (13-3) in the finale.
Ragusa posted a career-high four hits and a career-best three runs against Wagner. She finished the day 4-for-8 (.500) with a double. Alvarez, meanwhile, was 3-for-6 and also belted a double.
Senior catcher
Sara Herskowitz hit a team-best .600 for the day, going 3-for-5 and scoring a pair of runs.
In the opener against Wagner, the Bearcats broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the top of the third inning. Ragusa stole home to score the first run and Alvarez had a RBI single during that frame.
Binghamton scored twice more in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman
Tessa Nuss had a RBI ground out and senior pitcher
Rozlyn Price doubled home the other run.
Ragusa capped the scoring in the top of the sixth inning when she scored on a groundout by Alvarez.
Price improved to 1-2 with the victory while Madison Ferraro fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Sophomore
Marissa Braito finished the game 2-for-4.
Against Hampton, however, the Bearcats fell behind 4-0 thru two innings. Tiera Washington singled home a run in the bottom of the first inning and drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning.
Binghamton came back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Alvarez scored on a ground out and the other two runs came on a fielding error.
The Pirates then got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of a wild pitch.
Emily Workman improved to 2-2 with the win while senior pitcher
Rayn Gibson fell to 1-5 with the loss.
Herskowitz was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game.
Braito finished the day .500 (3-for-6).
Binghamton concludes play at the Norfolk- Hampton Tournament with a 10 game against Delaware on Sunday.
NOTES: Ragusa is the first Binghamton player to have four hits in a game since
Jessica Rutherford did the same against Hartford on May 4, 2018.
