VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women's basketball team has announced the signing of Birna Benonysdottir (pronounced BEER-nuh Ben-oh-NEESH-Dopsh-dish), a 6-3 forward from Keflavik, Iceland. She has three seasons of eligibility, having played for Arizona during the 2019-20 campaign.
Benonysdottir has competed on her U-16, U-18 and U-20 national teams. She averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds at the most recent U-20 European Championships. At the 2017 U-18 European Championships, she averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals. During the 2016 European Championships, she finished with 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
"We are excited to wrap up our signing class with the addition of Birna to our program," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "She is a skilled post player who has the ability to score in the paint as well as stretch the defenses with her ability to shoot from the outside. She is a very versatile player, can handle the ball, range to the 3, and has the size to be a presence in the paint."
At Arizona, Benonysdottir appeared in 10 games as a freshman.
With the signing of Benonysdottir, the Bearcats now have five players making up their incoming class for this fall. In April, the Bearcats announced the signings of Elena Delicado (Madrid, Spain), Kathryn Kirkwood (Milwaukee, Wisc.), Destiny Samuel (Queens, N.Y.) and Megan Jacobs (Las Vegas, Nev.).
