Women’s Basketball Holds Off UMass Lowell 67-63

Bowman scores 20 points, Benonysdottir nets 18 points

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore guard Denai Bowman scored a game-high 20 points and sophomore forward Birna Benonysdottir added 18 points, powering Binghamton (4-8, 4-6 AE) to a 67-63 victory at UMass Lowell (8-5, 7-3 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at the Costello Athletics Center. With the victory, the Bearcats gain the split against the River Hawks and have now won four of their past seven games. UMass Lowell won Saturday's contest 59-49.

Bowman went 8-for-18 from the field and was 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She also added a team-high seven rebounds and four steals. In addition, Bowman played in all 40 minutes of a game for the first time in her career.

Benonysdottir, meanwhile, was 8-of-12 from the field and canned two of her five three-point field goal shots. She also filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, two assists, a block and a pair of steals.

The Bearcats were down 54-49 at the end of the third period but took command of the game with a 13-0 run to go up 62-54 with 5:39 left in regulation. Bowman and Benonysdottir combined for nine points during that stretch.

The River Hawks clawed back to within 62-58 with 4:06 remaining but after over a minute of scoreless action, sophomore guard Hanna Strawn hit a clutch jumper with 2:45 to go.

With three seconds left in regulation, UMass Lowell was down 66-63 and had the ball when it called a timeout. It was determined, however, that the River Hawks were out of timeouts and they were assessed a technical foul. Junior guard Hayley Moore converted the second of her two free throws, clinching the victory for the Bearcats.

"It was such a great a team effort and our kids just battled right from the tip," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Basketball is a game of runs and we withstood every one of their runs. Everybody stepped up and it was such a great win today on the road. It was awesome."

The 67 points represents the Bearcats' best offensive output of the season. In addition, Binghamton also shot a season-best .474 from the field (27-of-57).

Moore finished with 10 points while sophomore forward Clare Traeger notched six points, three rebounds and three steals.

Jaliena Sanchez led UMass Lowell with 16 points. Tiahna Sears scored 15 points and Kharis Idom chipped in 10 points.

Sunday's win marked the fourth straight weekend that the Bearcats have bounced back to win the second game after dropping the opener.

"Last night after the game, we had over half the team ask to watch film with our coaching staff," Shapiro Ord said. "We did not require it at all. That is the type of team we have. They want to keep getting better each game."

Bowman, who entered the weekend ranked third in the America East in scoring, is now averaging 13.3 points per game. She has reached the 20-point mark in scoring three times this year.

Binghamton returns home to face Maine next weekend in another two-game conference series. Tip of time for both Saturday and Sunday is 2 p.m.
