VESTAL, NY -- Anne Simon and Blanca Millan combined for 42 points, powering first-place Maine (11-1, 8-1 AE) to a 67-46 victory over Binghamton (4-9, 4-7 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The game marked the first of back-to-back contests between the two teams, who will face each other again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Simon hit a game-high 22 points, going 9-of-14 from the field and draining a pair of three-point field goals. She also added seven rebounds and five steals.
Millan, meanwhile, turned in a 20-point, six steal, three-rebound performance. Entering the game, she ranked No. 16 in the nation with 22.7 points per game.
Binghamton was within striking range during the first half. They took a 12-11 lead after one period on a jumper by senior forward
Kaylee Wasco at the buzzer and were down by just 24-21 at the half.
Maine, however, blew the game open in the third period. The Black Bears went on a 16-0 run in a span of 2:54 to take a 40-23 lead with 5:15 left to go. Nine of their points during that span came off of Bearcat turnovers.
Maine went on to build their lead to as large as 65-37 with five minutes remaining in regulation.
"It was a tale of two halves today," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "In the first half, we played our game but we played right into Maine's hands in the second half with all of those turnovers. They are a very good team and they took advantage of our mistakes."
Sophomore guard
Denai Bowman led Binghamton with eight points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore forward
Clare Traeger grabbed a team-best eight rebounds to go along with five points and four steals.
Four other Bearcat players each finished with six points.
Dor Saar of Maine finished with a game-high of eight assists to go along with four points. In the process, she became the 22nd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark for their career.
Maine shot 50 percent for the game, hitting 29 of its 58 shots.
