Women’s Basketball Loses 70-53 to Maine

Benonysdottir scores game-high 18 points, Bowman add 15 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – First-place Maine (12-1, 9-1 AE) rode a balanced scoring attack on its way to a 70-53 win over Binghamton (4-10, 4-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Black Bears record the sweep in the weekend conference series, having won 67-46 on Saturday.

Blanca Millan posted a team-high 17 points. She was following in the scoring column by Dor Saar (13), Anne Simon (12) and Maeva Carroll (12).

Sophomore forward Birna Benonysdottir led all scorers with 18 points. She went 8-for-12 from the field and hit a pair of three-point field goals. Benonysdottir had 14 of her points in the first half alone but ran into foul trouble early in the third period and saw limited action thereafter.

Sophomore guard Denai Bowman netted 15 points, going 7-of-15 from the field. She also added eight rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and recorded a steal.

Maine broke the game open in the first 10 minutes, taking a 20-10 lead after one period of play. Millan had nine of her points during that stretch.

The Bearcats used an 8-0 run in a span of 2:24 to pull to within 31-29 with 49 seconds left in the second period. Benonysdottir made both of her three-point field goals during that span.

Maine took command of the game after the half, going back up 54-45 after three periods. The Black Bears then put the game out of reach with a 16-5 run in the opening 6:38 of the final period to take a 70-50 lead.

"We got to play 40 minutes against a very good team like Maine," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord. "We brought much better energy than we did yesterday but when we trailed in the second half, we were trading baskets with them and weren't able to mount a comeback."

The Black Bears outrebounded Binghamton 45-35 and held a 38-28 advantage in points in the paint. The Bearcats turned the ball over just 12 times but Maine capitalized on those miscues for 20 points.

Senior forward Kaylee Wasco tied Bowman for the team-high with eight rebounds to go along with seven points.

SCHEDULE NOTE: Due to Vermont canceling the remainder of its season, the America East Conference has announced schedule changes for the rest of the women's basketball teams. Binghamton will be back in action Feb. 6-7 at NJIT – a series that was originally scheduled for Feb. 27-28. The conference also announced that they will be releasing the rest of the season's games in two-week increments.
