Women’s Basketball Loses 43-38 to Albany

Wasco finishes with 13 points and six rebounds

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Ellen Hahne finished with a game-high 15 points, powering Albany (6-7, 5-4 AE) past Binghamton (4-11, 4-9 AE) 43-38 in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The game marked the first of back-to-back contests between the two teams, who will square off again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hahne, who scored 10 of her points in the final period, went 6-for-12 from the field. She also added five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.

Senior forward Kaylee Wasco led the Bearcats with 13 points, connecting on six of her eight field goal attempts. She also grabbed six rebounds. Junior guard Hayley Moore added eight points.

Despite dressing only eight players, Binghamton led for most of the game. The Bearcats were up by as much as 28-20 with 3:36 left to go in the third period.

From there, however, the Great Danes reeled off 10 straight points to go up 30-28 with 9:14 left in regulation. Kayla Cooper, who finished with 11 points, scored a team-best six points during that stretch.

The Bearcats regrouped to go up 35-32 with 6:20 remaining.

After that, Hahne took over the game. She spearheaded an 11-0 Great Dane run with 10 points. It was a pair of back-to-back reverse layups in the final two minutes of regulation that locked up the victory for Albany.

Sophomore guard Denai Bowman finished with a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four points and three assists. Sophomore forward Claire Traeger added seven rebounds.

With Binghamton playing shorthanded, the Great Danes held a commanding 15-2 advantage in bench scoring. They also led in rebounding 41-29 with 14 of them coming at the offensive end.

"We gave Albany too many second-chance scoring opportunities today," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Even though we were shorthanded, we played well defensively and Hayley Moore did a great job defensively for all 40 minutes today. But in the end, we allowed them to get the chances they needed to win."

Lucia Decortes led Albany with a game-high 13 rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end of the court.

After struggling in the first half shooting-wise, the Great Danes shot 50 percent in the second half (12-for-24).
